Former Trump Lawyer Michael Cohen Settles $1.3M Lawsuit Against Trump Organization
Attorneys representing Cohen and the Trump company were present in New York State Supreme Court in Manhattan on Friday to finalize the agreement. Cohen expressed his satisfaction with the resolution, stating, "This matter has been resolved in a manner satisfactory to all parties."
The Trump Organization, on the other hand, declined to comment on the settlement. The agreement was reached just before the case was scheduled to go to trial, with opening arguments initially set to begin on Monday. Witnesses, including Donald Trump Jr. and Trump Organization executive vice president Alan Garten, were prepared to testify, and jury selection had already been completed, with a panel of six men and three women ready to hear the case.
Cohen filed the lawsuit in 2019, alleging that the Trump Organization failed to honor a contractual agreement to "indemnify Mr. Cohen and to pay attorneys’ fees and costs incurred by Mr. Cohen in connection with various matters arising from Mr. Cohen’s work with and on behalf of the Organization and its principals, directors, and officers," which also involved Donald Trump. These matters included his involvement in multiple congressional hearings and Special Counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s investigation. Cohen claimed to have incurred millions of dollars in unreimbursed attorneys' fees and costs due to the Trump Organization's refusal to meet its indemnification obligations under the agreement.
In a recent development, Michael Cohen's lawsuit against the Trump Organization revealed that the company had stopped paying his legal fees in May 2018, right after reports emerged of Cohen cooperating with Special Counsel Robert S. Mueller III's investigation. Cohen's testimony before Congress in 2019 about Donald Trump and his company's business practices triggered an investigation by the Manhattan district attorney's office, which eventually led to a criminal conviction against the Trump Organization last year.
In response, Donald Trump filed a counter lawsuit against Cohen in federal court in Florida earlier this year, seeking more than $500 million in damages. Trump alleged that Cohen violated their attorney-client relationship by publicly disclosing sensitive information about him, spreading falsehoods likely to harm his reputation.
Cohen's attorney, Lanny Davis, characterized Trump's lawsuit as an attempt to harass and intimidate his client, asserting that Trump was misusing the judicial system to achieve his objectives. Cohen, expected to be a key witness in the pending criminal case against the former president brought by the Manhattan district attorney's office, remained undeterred and confident in the face of Trump's legal actions.
The situation reflects the ongoing legal battles and tensions between Michael Cohen and the Trump Organization, with the stakes escalating as Cohen's cooperation with authorities becomes a focal point in multiple investigations.
